Long drum roller marine fenders:advanced berthing protection for shipping industry

The marine infrastructure sector sees growing adoption of long drum roller rubber fenders, a specialized dynamic protective solution engineered for docks, ship locks, dry docks and restricted waterways. Unlike conventional static rubber fenders, this roller-type fender combines high-performance rubber rollers, rotating bearing assemblies and heavy-duty steel support frames to absorb berthing impact while enabling smooth rolling contact between vessel hulls and quay structures.

Production & Manufacturing Process

Manufacturing of long drum roller fenders follows strict marine engineering standards and multi-stage quality control:

1. Formulation & Raw Material Preparation Engineers develop custom rubber compound formulas with natural rubber, reinforcing carbon black, anti-aging agents and marine corrosion-resistant additives. The formula is optimized to resist seawater erosion, UV degradation, ozone aging and repeated compression fatigue, suitable for long-term offshore service. Raw rubber materials are inspected and mixed in internal mixers for uniform physical properties.

2. Roller Molding & Vulcanization The rubber drum body is shaped by wrapping rubber compound layer by layer or mold compression. The semi-finished drum is placed into high-temperature, high-pressure vulcanization tanks or vulcanizing presses. Controlled heating and pressure cross-link the rubber molecular structure to achieve target elasticity, hardness and tensile strength. Vulcanization parameters are precisely controlled to avoid internal voids or uneven hardness.

3. Metal Component Fabrication Steel base frames, support brackets, rotating shafts and bearing housings are cut, welded, sandblasted and coated with marine anti-corrosion paint. Stainless steel or composite maintenance-free bearings are fitted to the shaft assembly, guaranteeing stable free rotation under heavy load. All metal welds undergo penetration inspection.

4. Assembly, Finishing & Quality Testing Vulcanized rubber drums are mounted onto the rotating shaft and assembled with bearing sets and steel support frames. Trimming and surface finishing remove flash and surface defects. Finished products go through performance tests: impact energy absorption test, compression rebound test, rotation friction test and non-destructive internal inspection. Units are certified by marine classification societies before shipment.

Functions in Marine & Vessel Operations

Long drum roller fenders serve dual core roles: impact energy absorption and vessel guidance. When ships berth or pass through confined channels, the rubber drum rotates upon hull contact. This rotation converts lateral sliding friction into low-resistance rolling motion, while rubber deformation absorbs berthing kinetic energy.

· Protect vessel hull coatings and steel plates from scraping damage during angled berthing or side movement caused by tide, wind and current.

· Safeguard quay walls, lock gates, dry dock entrances and pier corners from heavy ship impact.

· Guide large vessels smoothly through narrow water passages, ship lock chambers and dock entry zones, preventing jamming or hard collision.

· Adapt to continuous lateral movement of vessels alongside berths, a scenario where fixed static fenders suffer rapid abrasion.

Core Advantages

1. Low Hull Abrasion & Anti-Scratching Performance The rolling contact drastically reduces sliding friction between hull and fender. It eliminates paint stripping and hull gouging issues common with traditional static fenders, critical for high-value cargo ships, tankers and cruise vessels.

2. Superior Energy Absorption & Stable Reaction Force The dual energy dissipation mechanism — rubber elastic deformation plus rotational movement — delivers high energy absorption while maintaining relatively low reaction force. It avoids sharp force spikes that can damage both ships and port structures.

3. Excellent Adaptability for Complex Berthing Scenarios Perfect for ship locks, dry docks, pier corners and narrow approach channels, where vessels often move laterally or make angled contact. Customizable drum length, diameter and frame sizes fit small barges up to ultra-large container carriers.

4. Marine Durability & Low Maintenance Premium rubber compound withstands seawater, salt spray, sunlight and cyclic loading. Sealed bearings reduce maintenance work. Heavy anti-corrosion coated steel frames extend service life even in harsh tidal environments.

5. Easy Installation & Modular Design The integrated base frame allows fast bolt-on installation on quay walls. Single or multiple roller units can be stacked or arranged in series to meet different berthing energy requirements.
